Lee County is located in the southwestern tip of the great state of Virginia and was formed on October 25, 1792. It was named in honor of one of the founding fathers of the United States, General Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee III, who also served as a Virginia governor from 1791 to 1794. The county is part of the larger Cumberland Plateau, a region rich in natural resources, including fertile farmland, coal, and timber.

Predominantly rural in nature, the county played a significant role in the American Civil War, with numerous men from the region enlisting and fighting in the war. After the Civil War, the economy of Lee County centered primarily on agriculture, specifically tobacco, and cattle farming.

A fun fact about Lee County, Virginia, is that it is the westernmost point in the state and is the furthest point from the state capital, Richmond, which is approximately 411 miles away. Additionally, the county is famed for the Wilderness Road State Park, which enshrines the path used by many westward-bound settlers, including Daniel Boone, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
