Lexington County does not exist in the state of Virginia. Instead, there is an independent city named Lexington, which is located in Rockbridge County. Established in 1778, it is said that Lexington was named in honor of Lexington, Massachusetts, the site of the first battle of the American Revolution.

The city has a rich history and is home to two prominent educational institutions: Virginia Military Institute (VMI) - the oldest state-supported military college in the United States, and Washington and Lee University, which is a private liberal arts university.

Lexington played a significant role during the American Civil War, serving as a strategic location due to its position in the Shenandoah Valley. The city was the final resting place for two essential Confederate generals, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee, who are buried at the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery and the Lee Chapel, respectively.

A fun fact about Lexington is that it has been nicknamed "The Horse Capital of Virginia," given the area's affection for horses and equestrian-related events.
