Manassas is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Although commonly mentioned as Manassas County, it is not a county but rather a separate jurisdiction from Prince William County. Manassas was designated as an independent city in 1975. The history of Manassas dates back to the early 18th century when the area was settled by European colonizers.

The city derives its name from the Manassas Gap, a railway junction built in 1852 for the Orange and Alexandria Railroads. It was originally called Manassas Junction but was later shortened to Manassas. The city played a significant role in the American Civil War, as it was a strategic railway junction connecting the North and South.

Two major battles of the Civil War, the First and Second Battles of Bull Run (also known as the First and Second Battles of Manassas), took place nearby in 1861 and 1862. These battles are memorialized in the Manassas National Battlefield Park, which commemorates the fallen soldiers and educates visitors about the historical events that occurred in that location.

Manassas has grown and evolved over the years, transitioning from a small railroad junction to a thriving city. It is home to several historic sites, museums, and cultural institutions, including the Manassas Museum, which provides visitors with insights into the area's rich history.

A fun fact about Manassas is that it hosts the annual Manassas Civil War Weekend, an event featuring reenactments, living history, and other activities that provide an immersive experience into the city's Civil War past.
