Middlesex County is located on the eastern part of Virginia, in the United States, and is part of the state's Northern Neck region. The county was established in 1673, carved out from Lancaster County. It gained its name from Middlesex, England, which reflects the strong ties between early settlers and their English origins.

Middlesex County was primarily an agricultural community, with tobacco as the chief cash crop during the early years. As the industry developed, fishing in the many waterways surrounding the county also became an essential part of the local economy. In the 19th century, several industries like steamship trade, canned goods, and timber exports flourished.

An interesting and fun fact about this region is that it is the birthplace of two influential Virginians, who became prominent founding fathers of the nation. President George Washington's great-grandfather, John Washington, was from Middlesex County, as well as President James Madison's father, James Madison Sr. Both of these historical figures contributed greatly to the development of the United States, and their roots can be traced back to Middlesex County, Virginia.
