New Kent County is located in the eastern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA. The county was officially established in 1654 and is named in honor of the English county, Kent. It is rich with historical significance, as it is home to several landmarks and sits between the two oldest English-speaking settlements in the United States: Jamestown and the city of Richmond.

One of the key historical events that took place in New Kent County is the campaign of British General Cornwallis during the American Revolutionary War in 1781. The county also has a unique connection to the American president, Martha Washington. Martha's father, John Dandridge, owned a plantation called "Chestnut Grove" in New Kent County, where Martha was born and raised before moving to Mount Vernon.

During the colonial period, the county had a prosperous economy based on tobacco production, which led to the establishment of several plantations. Over time, the region diversified with agriculture, forestry, and residential development, preserving its historical essence while adapting to modern needs.

New Kent County is home to several historic landmarks, such as St. Peter's Church, which was built in the 17th century and has strong connections to George Washington's family.
