Norfolk County, located in the southeastern part of the great state of Virginia, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. It was established as a county in 1691 when the House of Burgesses, Virginia's legislative body, divided the earlier territory known as Lower Norfolk County. Named after the English county of Norfolk, it initially encompassed the present-day cities of Norfolk, Chesapeake, and parts of Portsmouth.

During its early history, Norfolk County developed a primarily agricultural economy with tobacco being the leading cash crop. The proximity to waterways, including the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay, and numerous rivers, played a significant role in the development of the area, leading to prosperous shipbuilding, trade, and fishing industries. The establishment of the Gosport Shipyard (later known as Norfolk Naval Shipyard) in 1767 contributed to the growth of the county's prominence in shipbuilding.

The Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and the American Civil War also left significant marks on Norfolk County. During the Revolutionary War, Norfolk was completely destroyed by British forces in 1776, leading to the relocation of many residents. In the War of 1812, the county suffered from British raids, but it served crucially as a naval base for the United States' resistance. During the Civil War, Norfolk County saw action and temporary occupation by Union forces, further emphasizing the strategic importance of the area.

Norfolk County ceased to exist in 1963 when it was consolidated with the city of South Norfolk to create the city of Chesapeake. Today, the region provides a blend of urban conveniences and rural charm, with its historical sites, nature reserves, and a thriving cultural scene.

Fun fact: Norfolk County was the birthplace of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's wife, Mary Anna Custis Lee, who was also the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington, the first First Lady of the United States.
