Orange County is located in the central piedmont region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Established in 1734, it was named in honor of William IV, the Prince of Orange and son-in-law of King George II of Great Britain. The county's history is deeply rooted in its role during various significant events in American history.

Orange County's most famous historical site is Montpelier, the estate of James Madison, who was the fourth President of the United States and the "Father of the Constitution." Montpelier is now a National Trust Historic Site, and it is open for public tours.

During the American Civil War, the region saw significant action, as it was considered a strategic location for both the Confederate and Union armies. The Battle of the Wilderness (1864) and the Battle of Mine Run (1863) were both fought in Orange County. As a result, many Civil War historical sites can be found throughout the county.

One fun fact about Orange County is that it was once part of a larger land division called the Spotsylvania Patent. In 1714, Alexander Spotswood, Virginia's Lieutenant Governor, constructed a home near the Rapidan River and founded the Germanna Colony. Today, the Germanna Foundation maintains a visitor center, museum, and research library to help visitors explore the history of the early settlement.
