Patrick County, located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, was officially established on May 11, 1791, when it was formed from the western part of Henry County. Named in honor of Patrick Henry, a Founding Father and the first Governor of Virginia, the county is steeped in history and natural beauty. The county seat, Stuart, was originally named Taylorsville in honor of George Taylor, who donated the land for the county seat; however, it was renamed Stuart in 1884 in tribute to Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart, who was born nearby in Ararat, Virginia.

Native Americans, including the Dan River Sioux, were among the area's first residents, followed by European settlers in the mid-1700s. Agriculture and tobacco farming have played a significant role in the county's history, and although the tobacco industry has diminished, agriculture remains an essential element of the local economy.

A fun fact about Patrick County is that it is home to the popular tourist destination of Fairy Stone State Park. The park gets its name from the fairy stones, which are small crosses made of staurolite crystals-unique geological formations found in the region. These stones are believed to bring good luck to those who possess them, and the park is one of the few places in the world where these distinctive crystals can be found.
