Petersburg County, now part of the independent city of Petersburg, is located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its history dates back to the 17th century when it was originally settled by English colonists as a trading post named Peter's Point in 1635. In 1646, Fort Henry was constructed along the Appomattox River to protect the area against potential attacks from Native Americans.

The city of Petersburg played a vital role during the Revolutionary War. During the Siege of Petersburg in 1781, American and French forces attacked British troops in the Battle of Blandford, contributing to the eventual American victory. The city officially incorporated in 1748 and became an essential center for trade and transportation as it connected Richmond to the Atlantic Ocean. During the 19th century, the city grew rapidly due to the tobacco industry, and Petersburg became the site of one of the first railroad trunk lines in the United States.

Petersburg was also prominently involved in the Civil War, as the Confederates established a strong defensive line around the city. The Siege of Petersburg, lasting from June 1864 to April 1865, was a series of battles aimed at cutting off Confederate supply lines. The Union eventually captured the city on April 3, 1865, which led Confederate General Robert E. Lee to surrender at Appomattox Court House just one week later.

One fun fact about Petersburg is the role it played in the world of entertainment. It served as a shooting location for several movies and TV series, including Steven Spielberg's historical drama Lincoln (2012) and the popular TV series TURN: Washington's Spies (2014-2017).
