Poquoson County, located in the great state of Virginia, has a rich history that dates back to its founding in the 17th century. Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Powhatan Confederacy, the area was later settled by English colonists in the early 1600s. The name "Poquoson" is derived from an Algonquian Native American word meaning "great marsh."

In 1631, Charles River Parish was established, and the village of Poquoson grew in the parish. In 1634, the area became part of Elizabeth City Shire, one of the original eight shires of colonial Virginia. By 1952, Elizabeth City Shire was renamed Elizabeth City County, and Poquoson remained a part of it until 1974, when the city of Poquoson was established as an independent city separate from the county.

During the American Revolutionary War, Poquoson played a role as a strategically important point for Revolutionary forces. The Battle of Hampton, which took place in October 1775, resulted in the victorious capture of British forces by the Continental Army, thus preventing the British from establishing a nearby base.

Despite its modest size and population, Poquoson has been home to several noteworthy figures throughout history, including renowned 18th century American architect Robert Cary Long, Jr., and astronaut Susan Kilrain, who was born in Poquoson, Virginia, in 1961.

A fun fact about Poquoson is that it is situated on the Poquoson River and the Chesapeake Bay, which provides numerous recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, including fishing, boating, and enjoying the various marshes and waterways that make the area unique. The area is also home to the Poquoson Seafood Festival, held annually since 1981, to celebrate the city's coastal heritage and provide opportunities for local vendors to showcase their products and services.
