Prince Edward County is located in the heart of Virginia and was established in 1754. Named after Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany, a son of King George III of England, this county has a rich history dating back to colonial America. Farmville, the county's largest town, became the official county seat in 1798.

During the Revolutionary War, Prince Edward County served as a crucial logistical center where the British prisoners from the Battle of Saratoga (1777) were held. In the 19th century, two major educational institutions were established in the county: Hampden-Sydney College, founded in 1775, and the Virginia State Female Normal School, now known as Longwood University, founded in 1839.

One of Prince Edward County's most well-known historical moments took place during the Civil Rights Movement, when it became a focus of national attention for closing its public schools from 1959 to 1964. The county's leadership took this drastic measure to resist the desegregation ordered by the U.S. Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954. This led to the formation of the "Free Schools" by the Prince Edward Free School Association, which provided education to African American children during this time.

A fun fact about Prince Edward County is that it is part of the Tobacco Heritage Trail (a series of recreational trails throughout south-central Virginia), which represents an important part of the region's historic and cultural heritage regarding tobacco farming and trading.
