Radford County, also known as the "City of Radford," is an independent city situated in the Commonwealth of Virginia. While it does not belong to any county, it is often associated with Montgomery County for statistical purposes. Radford's history can be traced back to the mid-1700s when European settlers began moving to the New River Valley region.

Initially named Lovely Mount, Radford was officially established in 1887 when the Virginia General Assembly approved its charter. The city quickly developed due to the presence of the Norfolk and Western Railway, which spurred economic growth and infrastructure improvements.

Throughout the early 20th century, the manufacturing industry in Radford expanded. By the mid-1900s, the city had a robust manufacturing economy with companies such as Xaloy, a producer of high-quality industrial components, thriving in the region. The construction of the New River Ordnance Plant (now Radford Army Ammunition Plant) during World War II further contributed to Radford's industrial importance.

A noteworthy institution in Radford is Radford University, which was originally founded in 1910 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women. Today, it has evolved into a comprehensive, co-educational public university offering diverse academic programs to students from across the globe.

One fun fact about Radford is that it has a unique celebration called the "Highlanders Festival" - an annual event showcasing Scottish and Celtic culture. The festival, held at Bisset Park, features games, music, dancing, and food inspired by the heritage of the Scottish highlands, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for these cultural traditions within Radford.
