Russell County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of Virginia. It was established on December 17, 1785, by an act of the Virginia General Assembly that divided Washington County into two parts. The new county was named in honor of Colonel William Russell, a prominent military figure in the region during the Revolutionary War.

The area had been inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Cherokee and Shawnee, for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. The first known English-speaking settlers in Russell County were brothers, William and Daniel Kendrick, who arrived in 1769. Russell County was settled by pioneers who moved westward to expand the American frontier.

Russell County has been famous for its rich agricultural production, including corn and cattle farming, and coal mining. The Clinch River, which runs through the county, has historically played a vital role in its economy, as it facilitated trade and transportation of goods.

During the Civil War, Russell County was split in its loyalties, with some residents supporting the Confederacy and others supporting the United States. The county was site to small skirmishes but no major battles. After the war, Russell County experienced modest growth and development, focusing on farming and mining industries.

A fun fact about the region is that Russell County is well known for the Devil's Bathtub, a naturally-formed swimming hole in the Jefferson National Forest. The Devil's Bathtub is a popular hiking destination, featuring beautiful, clear water with a blue-green hue surrounded by a lush, forested landscape.
