Salem County is actually located in the state of New Jersey, not Virginia. It was established in 1694 as part of West Jersey and is one of the earliest counties in the state. The county seat, Salem, is the oldest continuously settled location in the state, having been settled in 1675 by a group of Quakers led by John Fenwick looking for religious freedom. The region was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans before the arrival of European settlers.

During colonial times, Salem County was an essential agricultural region, producing wheat, corn, and livestock, and supported trading activities through the Delaware River, which allowed connection with Philadelphia. The county played a role in the Revolutionary War and the Quakers participated in anti-war efforts and facilitated support for the disadvantaged.

In the 19th century, towns in the region thrived as ports and glass manufacturing centers. This historical heritage is visible today in the well-preserved landscape and architecture that dates back centuries.

A fun fact about Salem County is that it hosts a unique annual event called the "Cowtown Rodeo," the oldest weekly rodeo in the USA. Founded in 1929, it showcases traditional cowboy skills such as bull riding, horseback riding, and calf roping.
