Scott County is located in the southwestern region of the Commonwealth of Virginia, which was established in 1814. It was named in honor of General Winfield Scott, a prominent U.S. Army officer who later became a hero during the Mexican-American War and the Civil War.

The area comprising Scott County was originally inhabited by native tribes such as the Cherokee and Shawnee. European settlers, mainly of Scotch-Irish and German descent, began to arrive in the mid-18th century, attracted by the fertile land for farming and abundant natural resources. During the American Revolutionary War, skirmishes occurred in the region, and it played an important role in Western Virginia frontier defense.

Over the years, the economy of Scott County centered on agriculture, particularly tobacco and corn farming. Timber, coal mining, and manufacturing also contributed to the economic development. As of 2020, the estimated population of Scott County is around 22,000.

A fun fact about Scott County is that it is home to the Natural Tunnel State Park, which features the Natural Tunnel: a 10-story high, 850-foot-long limestone cave that has been referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World."
