Smyth County is located in the great state of Virginia and was established in 1832. The county was named in honor of Alexander Smyth, a General during the War of 1812 and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia. Smyth County is part of the Mountain Empire, which consists of areas in Virginia, Tennessee, and Western North Carolina.

The county seat of Smyth County is Marion, which was established in 1832 as well, and named after Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, also known as "The Swamp Fox." Smyth County has a rich history, particularly associated with the Civil War. During that time, the Battle of Marion took place in December 1864, as part of Union General George Stoneman's raid through the region.

Nestled within the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, Smyth County boasts a variety of natural attractions, including the picturesque Hungry Mother State Park. This park is one of the oldest state parks in Virginia, established in 1936. It got its unique name from the tale of a Native American raid, during which a child survived by eating berries, eventually leading to the discovery of its mother after wandering into the area now known as Hungry Mother State Park.

A fun fact about Smyth County is that it is home to the Lincoln Theatre in Marion, which serves as one of only three existing Art Deco Mayan Revival-style theaters in the United States. The theater opened in 1929 and underwent extensive restoration in the early 2000s. It currently functions as a performing arts venue and community center, showcasing regional talent and history.
