Spotsylvania County is located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, south of the Rappahannock River, and was established in 1721. The County is named after Alexander Spotswood, the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1710 to 1722, who played a significant role in promoting the growth and settlement of the region. The County's seat is Spotsylvania Courthouse, which played a crucial role in history, especially during the American Civil War.

Spotsylvania County played an essential part in American history, serving as the site for several key battles during the Civil War, including the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battle of the Wilderness. The most famous battle took place at Spotsylvania Court House, which lasted from May 8 to May 21, 1864, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides.

In terms of historical landmarks, the County is home to several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Spotsylvania Courthouse Village Historic District and the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.

A fun fact about Spotsylvania County is that Lake Anna, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Virginia, is partially located within the county. The lake was built in 1971 to serve as a cooling agent for the North Anna Nuclear Generating Station.
