Suffolk County is a jurisdiction within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Although it is technically an independent city rather than a county, it is referred to as Suffolk County. Established in 1742, it was named in honor of Royal Governor William Gooch's home county of Suffolk, England. Suffolk initially served as a major port for the export of tobacco and other agricultural products, thanks to its prime location on the waterways of the Nansemond River and the James River.

The city grew further in importance with the construction of the Great Dismal Swamp Canal in the early 19th century, which connected the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina with the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. This feat of engineering facilitated deeper connections between regions and boosted both trade and travel.

During the American Civil War, Suffolk witnessed several skirmishes and was occupied by Union forces as a crucial location for the defense of Norfolk and the mouth of the James River. Following the Civil War, the area experienced growth in the peanut processing industry, which it still celebrates today during the annual Suffolk Peanut Festival.

A fun fact about Suffolk County is that each year, it hosts the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which contains over 110,000 acres of protected forested wetlands. This remarkable location is home to diverse flora and fauna, including over 200 species of birds, and offers numerous recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike.
