Tazewell County is situated in southwestern Virginia and is part of the Appalachian Mountain region. The County was formed on December 20, 1799 from parts of Wythe and Russell Counties, and it was named after Henry Tazewell, a prominent Virginia statesman who served in the Virginia House of Delegates and the United States Senate. The County seat is located in the town of Tazewell.

During the 19th century, Tazewell County experienced significant growth due to the expansion of the railroad system, which facilitated the transportation of coal and other natural resources from the area. In the following years, coal mining became a staple industry in Tazewell County, playing an important role in the growth and development of the region. Other notable industries in the region included agriculture, focusing on cereal grains and livestock.

The county also played a part in the American Civil War. The residents were largely pro-Confederate, and Tazewell County contributed troops to the Confederate Army. Although no major battles occurred in the region, several skirmishes took place throughout the war, and the area experienced its share of hardships due to the conflict.

One fun fact about Tazewell County is that it is home to Burke's Garden, Virginia's highest valley. Burke's Garden, also called "God's Thumbprint" due to its bowl shape, was discovered by James Burke in 1748. The valley is known for its natural beauty and unique landscape features, as well as its fertile farmland, attracting visitors who enjoy outdoor activities and stunning views.
