Washington County is located in the southwestern region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Established in 1776, it was named after George Washington, who was then Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and later became the first President of the United States. With its county seat in Abingdon, Washington County is part of the Kingsport-Bristol-Bristol, TN-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area, also known as the "Tri-Cities" region.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Cherokee and the Shawnee. European settlers, primarily of Scotch-Irish and German descent, began arriving in the area in the 1740s. Washington County played a significant role during the Revolutionary War, with the area serving as a center of military activity. The Battle of Kings Mountain, a pivotal battle during the war, was fought by troops mainly from Washington County.

Agriculture, especially tobacco farming, played a significant role in Washington County's economy during its early history. Later, the county experienced economic growth through the development of the iron and coal industries and the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s.

One fun fact about Washington County is that it is home to the Virginia Creeper Trail, a 34-mile multi-use rail trail that offers beautiful landscapes and outdoor recreational opportunities to locals and visitors. The trail was named after the steam engine that once chugged along the same route and earned the nickname "Virginia Creeper" due to its slow pace as it crawled up the steep mountain grades.
