Westmoreland County is located in the Northern Neck of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Established in 1653, it was named after the English county of Westmorland. The county is steeped in history and holds immense significance in the formation and early years of the United States.

Two of America's Founding Fathers and early presidents were born in Westmoreland County. George Washington, the first president, was born at Pope's Creek in the county in 1732, while James Monroe, the fifth president, was born in 1758 in Westmoreland County. Both of their properties, known as George Washington Birthplace National Monument and the James Monroe Birthplace, are presently managed and preserved by the National Park Service.

Nestled on the Potomac River's shores, Westmoreland County was primarily an agricultural region, with tobacco being a key crop during the colonial period. The county also played an essential role during the War of 1812, as it was near the waterway taken by the British on their way to attack Washington, D.C.

A fun fact about Westmoreland County is that it is also the birthplace of Robert E. Lee, a prominent military figure who led the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Born in 1807, Lee's family home, known as Stratford Hall, is now a National Historic Landmark, and visitors can tour the house and grounds to learn more about the county's history and connection to the American Civil War.
