Wythe County is a picturesque region located in the southwestern portion of the state of Virginia, in the United States of America. Established on May 1, 1790, and named in honor of George Wythe, a prominent Virginia statesman, lawyer, and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The area was originally part of Montgomery County, but later acquired its own identity as settlers moved westward to explore and develop new lands.

Wythe County is woven into the Appalachian culture and heritage that defines the region, and its history goes back even further with Native American tribes, such as the Cherokee and Shawnee, inhabiting the area long before European settlers arrived. The early European settlers were primarily of Scottish, Irish, and German descent, and they brought with them traditions and skills that influenced the culture and economy of this region.

Over the centuries, Wythe County's economy has been driven by agriculture, livestock, manufacturing, and tourism. The region boasts natural beauty with scenic drives, rolling hills, and recreational opportunities like hiking, biking, and fishing, drawing visitors from all over.

One fun fact about Wythe County is that it is home to the "Big Walker Lookout," which is situated atop the 3,405-foot Big Walker Mountain. The lookout offers panoramic views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains, and visitors can also explore a 100-foot observation tower, a swinging bridge, and a country store featuring local crafts and treats.

Today, Wythe County holds onto its rich history and heritage while continually looking to the future, as it remains an important part of the great Appalachian story within Virginia.
