Bennington County, Vermont
.Bennington County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Vermont. It was named after Benning Wentworth, the colonial governor of New Hampshire, who granted the land in 1749. It is one of the two original counties in Vermont, established on February 11, 1778, when the state was still an independent republic.
The county played a significant role in the Revolutionary War, being home to the Battle of Bennington in 1777, where American forces led by General John Stark defeated a British detachment led by Lieutenant Colonel Friedrich Baum. The battle is considered a turning point in the war, as it weakened the British forces and made possible the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga later that year. The Bennington Battle Monument, a 306 feet tall obelisk, was built to commemorate this historic event.
A fun fact about Bennington County is that it is the third-largest county by land area in Vermont, divided into the Green Mountain National Forest and the Taconic Range, which provide endless outdoor recreation opportunities for visitors and residents alike. Additionally, the Manchester Village, located in the county, is known for its prestigious private liberal arts college, the Southern Vermont College, which operated from 1974 until its closure in 2019.
