Essex County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Vermont. Established on November 5, 1792, it is one of the state's smallest counties by population, with just over 6,000 residents as of 2020. The county was named after Essex County in England, paying homage to the area's British heritage. Essex County consists of several small towns and communities, including Brighton, Canaan, Concord, and Lunenburg.

The region has a rich history dating back to the Native Americans who lived in the area, and later, European settlers who began arriving in the late 18th century. Lumber and agriculture became the primary industries of this region in the 19th and 20th centuries.

One fun fact about Essex County is that it is home to the Norton-Noyes home in Norton, Vermont. Built in 1820 by Joseph Noyes, the home has historical significance as it once served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, providing shelter for runaway slaves seeking freedom in Canada during the mid-1800s.
