Franklin County is located in the northwestern part of Vermont and was founded in 1792. Known for its rich history, natural beauty, and farming heritage, the region is named after Benjamin Franklin, a prominent statesman, diplomat, and Founding Father of the United States.

Before European settlers arrived, Native American tribes like the Abenaki inhabited the area. European settlement in Franklin County began in the mid-18th century, distributing the indigenous people. The county was officially established on November 5, 1792, by the Vermont Legislature.

Over time, Franklin County developed as an agricultural hub, producing a variety of crops including hay, potatoes, corn, and wheat. In the 19th century, dairy farming became popular, giving the county and the state of Vermont a reputation for producing some of the finest dairy products in the country.

Today, Franklin County consists of 15 picturesque towns and one city-St. Albans-which serve as the county seat. St. Albans is best known for the St. Albans Raid, a Confederate raid from the American Civil War, and it was the northernmost Confederate land action of the war. The incident took place on October 19, 1864, when a group of Confederate soldiers raided the city, robbing several banks and evading Union forces, only to be caught when they tried to escape to Canada.

One fun fact about Franklin County is that it hosts the Vermont Maple Festival in St. Albans every year to celebrate the state's signature product: maple syrup. This festival features various activities, such as a maple syrup contest, a parade, and delicious food vendors specializing in maple-based dishes.
