Orleans County is located in the northeastern part of the state of Vermont, and it was founded on November 5, 1792. This county is part of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, a term that refers to the three counties in the northeastern region of the state: Orleans, Caledonia, and Essex. Covering approximately 721 square miles, Orleans County is home to the Memphremagog Watershed, and it serves as a gateway to both Vermont's Green Mountains and Quebec, Canada.

The county was named after Louis Philippe II, Duc d'Orleans, in honor of his support for the American cause during the Revolutionary War. Orleans County has a rich history of agriculture, with dairy farming and maple syrup production being significant contributors to the local economy.

The county seat is Newport, which boasts a historical connection to both the rail and maritime industries. The city also serves as an important hub of commerce and tourism for the region, with a vibrant downtown center situated along the shores of Lake Memphremagog.

A fun fact about Orleans County is that it is home to the Haskell Free Library and Opera House, which is located on the border between Vermont and Quebec, Canada. This historic building, constructed in 1904, has a unique feature: it was intentionally built to straddle the border so that people from both the United States and Canada could visit and enjoy its collection and performances without going through customs. Today, it remains a popular attraction and symbolizes the friendship between the two countries.
