Washington County is located in central Vermont, a state in the northeastern region of the United States. It was officially established on February 23, 1781, when Vermont became an independent republic, and was named in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States. The county's early history can be traced back to 1763, when King George III of England issued a chart for the town of Montpelier, which later became the state capital of Vermont in 1805.

During the early days of the county, agriculture and lumbering were the major industries. As the Industrial Revolution spread across the United States, the county evolved its economic base, and manufacturing, particularly in the construction of machinery, took off. Many mills were built along the Winooski River, which runs through the county, to harness its power for industries.

Throughout its history, Washington County has been a center for politics, education, and innovation. As the home to Montpelier (the state capital), the county hosts Vermont's state government functions. Montpelier is also home to the Vermont College of Fine Arts, adding a vibrant arts culture to the region. Barre, another important city in Washington County, is known as the "Granite Center of the World" due to its rich history in the granite industry.

Fun Fact: The Vermont State House, located in Montpelier, is the nation's oldest state capitol building that has been in continuous legislative use since its completion in 1859. Its golden dome and classical architecture make it a distinctive and recognizable landmark in Washington County.
