Columbia County, located in the southeastern part of the great state of Washington, was established on November 11, 1875. The county was named in honor of the Columbia River, which in turn was named after the American ship, Columbia Rediviva, captained by Robert Gray in 1792. The county seat is Dayton, which was founded in 1871 and incorporated in 1881, and serves as the main hub for the county's activities and events.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Palouse and the Nez Perce. The first Europeans to visit the area were members of the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1805-1806. In the mid-19th century, the area began to attract fur traders and missionaries, and later, in the 1860s, gold was discovered nearby, leading to a sizable influx of settlers.

Columbia County's economy has historically been driven by agriculture, mainly wheat and livestock, but has also been supported by industries like logging, mining, and railroads. The development of hydroelectric dams along the Snake River in the 20th century improved irrigation, providing a boost to farming in the area.

The county is characterized by picturesque landscapes, including rolling hills and fertile farmlands, and has a rich cultural heritage. The local small towns offer a range of events and attractions, from history museums to art festivals.

Fun Fact: Columbia County is home to the oldest working courthouse in the state of Washington, which was built in 1887. This charming, red brick courthouse still functions as the center of local government and justice, and even retains its original clock tower.
