Island County is located in the northwestern region of the state of Washington in the United States. It was officially founded on January 6, 1853, and was named in honor of the many islands in the nearby waters. Comprising primarily of two large islands, Whidbey Island and Camano Island, it also includes several smaller islands in the Puget Sound.

The region was originally inhabited by indigenous tribes such as the Skagit, Snohomish, and Swinomish, who had established communities there and sought resources from the surrounding waterways. The first European contact occurred in 1790 when Spanish explorer Manuel Quimper visited Whidbey Island's Penn Cove. Later, in 1792, British Captain George Vancouver further explored and mapped the region, naming Whidbey Island after his lieutenant, Joseph Whidbey.

Throughout the 19th century, Island County witnessed an increase in settlers, spurred partly by the 1846 Oregon Treaty which established the 49th parallel as the United States and British-controlled Canada border. Early settlers in Island County relied largely on fishing, agriculture, logging, and maritime activities for their livelihood.

Today, Island County remains known for its natural beauty, unique wildlife, and outdoor recreational activities. It is also home to the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, one of the largest employers in the area.

Fun Fact: Deception Pass Bridge, a twin-span suspension bridge connecting Whidbey Island and Fidalgo Island, is one of the most photographed landmarks in Washington. It was constructed during the Great Depression, with completion in 1935, and provides incredible views of the surrounding area.
