King County, located in the great state of Washington, was established on December 22, 1852. Initially, it was named after Vice President William R. King, who was instrumental in the formation of the Washington Territory. However, in 1986, the county decided to change its namesake to honor a more influential historical figure, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights leader and advocate for peace and equality.

Covering 2,307 square miles, King County is home to Seattle, the state's largest city. The region saw significant growth during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1890s, as Seattle served as a major transportation and supply hub. Over the years, the county has continued to thrive, becoming an economic powerhouse with numerous industries flourishing such as technology, aviation, and manufacturing, with companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Boeing headquartered in the area.

A fun fact about King County is that it is home to the famous Pike Place Market in Seattle, which opened in 1907 and is one of the oldest continuously operated public farmers' markets in the United States. The market is known for its fish-throwing tradition, where filleted fish are tossed between fishmongers in the market after being chosen by customers.
