Mason County, located in the great state of Washington, has a significant historical background. The county was officially formed on March 13, 1854 and was named in honor of Charles H. Mason, the first Secretary of Washington Territory. The region encompasses approximately 1,051 square miles and is situated in the western part of the state, near the southern end of the Hood Canal.

The native Skokomish and Squaxin Island tribes have inhabited this region for thousands of years and still maintain strong cultural ties to the land. European exploration began in the late 18th century with the arrival of British and Spanish explorers. Captain George Vancouver was one of the first Europeans to visit the area in 1792.

The growth and development of Mason County were primarily driven by the timber and agricultural industries. In the mid-19th century, many settlers were drawn to the area by the promise of fertile land and abundant resources. Over the decades, logging, milling, and farming played an essential role in shaping the economic landscape of the county.

Today, Mason County is home to both natural beauty and a thriving cultural scene. The county boasts approximately 92 square miles of water, including the southern part of the Hood Canal, various lakes, and rivers, making it an attractive destination for water enthusiasts.

Fun fact: Mason County hosts the annual Forest Festival, a tradition since 1945, and celebrates the region's rich history and connection to the forest industry. The festival, held in the county seat of Shelton, features a parade, a fun run, a carnival, a fireworks display, and the popular Paul Bunyan Grand Parade, named after the legendary folk hero and lumberjack.
