Pend Oreille County is located in the northeastern corner of Washington State and was created on March 1, 1911. The county is named for the Pend Oreille River, which derived its name from the Native American term for "ear pendants." The river and region were named by French fur traders who noticed the ear pendants worn by the native Kalispel tribe population.

Before European contact, the area was occupied by the Kalispel and Spokane Native American tribes who relied on the abundant resources, such as fish and game, provided by the rivers and forests. In the early 19th century, the fur trade brought Europeans to the region, including the Hudson's Bay Company and North West Company.

The County is rich in available minerals, and mining grew to play a significant role in the local economy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The development of the railroad in the early 1900s further bolstered the economy, supporting the growth of logging, milling, and agricultural sectors, as well as the expansion of the county's population.

Pend Oreille County's largest city is Newport, acting as the county seat, with over 2,000 residents. The county is known for its pristine landscape and numerous outdoor recreational activities, including fishing, boating, swimming, and snow sports.

Fun fact: Box Canyon Dam, located across the Pend Oreille River, is a famous site in the county. This hydroelectric dam is one of the smallest hydroelectric dams in the United States, but it is a powerhouse when it comes to generating electricity, producing enough energy to power approximately 27,000 homes.
