San Juan County, located in the great state of Washington, is an archipelago of 172 named islands and reefs in Puget Sound, along the northern coastline of Washington State. The county was created on October 31, 1873, from Whatcom County and was named after one of the islands, San Juan Island, which was the site of the famous boundary dispute between the United States and Britain, known as the Pig War of 1859.

The indigenous inhabitants of San Juan County were the Coast Salish peoples, who traveled and settled on the islands for thousands of years prior to European exploration. In 1791, Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza led an expedition, which named the islands "Archipelago de San Juan." In 1843, the British Hudson's Bay Company set up the Belle Vue Sheep Farm on San Juan Island, initiating the foundation of permanent settlements.

In 1859, the Pig War took place when an escalating conflict between British and American settlers arose due to the killing of an English-owned pig by an American farmer on San Juan Island. The situation was only resolved after a boundary commission determined that the islands belonged to the United States in 1872, under the arbitration of German Emperor Wilhelm I.

Today, San Juan County has become a popular destination for tourists who appreciate its natural beauty, parks, and marine wildlife. It is known for abundant outdoor recreational opportunities like boating, kayaking, whale watching, and hiking.

Fun fact: One of the unique aspects of San Juan County is its high concentration of bald eagles. With a sizeable population of the majestic birds, the area has become a prime location for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers to observe them in their natural habitat.
