Wahkiakum County is a small rural county located in the southwestern part of the state of Washington, along the Columbia River's northern border with Oregon. The county was officially created on April 25, 1854, as a part of the Washington Territory, which was established in 1853. The name "Wahkiakum" is derived from the native Chinookan tribe "Wahkiakum" (meaning "tall timber") who inhabited the region before the arrival of European settlers.

The first European contact with the area was by American explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in 1805, during their famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. During the 19th century, the region's economy primarily revolved around farming, logging, and fishing, given its abundant natural resources and fertile lands.

The county seat, Cathlamet, is the only incorporated town within the county, and it was first settled in 1846 by James John Birnie. Today, the county remains largely rural, with a population of around 4,000 residents.

A fun fact about Wahkiakum County is that it is home to one of the last remaining ferries on the lower Columbia River, the Wahkiakum County Ferry, which connects Cathlamet, Washington, to Westport, Oregon. The ferry has been in continuous operation since 1925 and holds the distinction of being the last operating regularly scheduled car and passenger ferry service crossing the Columbia River.
