Door County is a picturesque region in the northeastern part of the great state of Wisconsin, known for its natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant cultural scene. It is located on a narrow peninsula that extends into the waters of Lake Michigan and Green Bay, with a total land area of approximately 483 square miles. The region gets its name from the dangerous strait between Green Bay and Lake Michigan called the "Death's Door" or "Porte des Morts," coined by early French explorers after several shipwrecks occurred in the area.

The history of Door County can be traced back to approximately 10,000 years ago when Paleo-Indians inhabited the region. Later, Native American tribes, such as the Potawatomi, Ojibwe, and Menominee, settled in the area, relying on fishing, hunting, and gathering for their livelihood. European exploration of Door County began in the 17th century when French explorers Jean Nicolet and Samuel de Champlain arrived in the area.

In the 19th century, settlers from various European countries, predominantly Scandinavians, Belgians, and Germans, migrated to Door County, attracted by fertile land and abundant natural resources. The logging and fishing industries were the primary drivers of the local economy. Door County later evolved into a popular tourist destination, known for its charming small towns, beautiful shorelines, and abundance of outdoor recreational activities.

A fun fact about Door County is that it is home to five historic lighthouses, which were once vital navigational aids for sailors navigating the treacherous Death's Door passage. Today, these well-preserved lighthouses act as living museums and popular tourist attractions, offering a glimpse into the region's maritime history.
