Florence County is a small county situated in the great state of Wisconsin, USA. Established on December 21, 1882, the county was named in honor of Florence Hulst, the first white woman to settle in the region. Florence County is part of the Iron Mountain Micropolitan Statistical Area and is known for its rich history linked with the logging and mining industries.

Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, the area witnessed an influx of European settlers in the 1800s. The Menominee Iron Range, which runs through the county, became a significant iron mining hub during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The logging industry took over when mining activities started to decline, substantially contributing to the local economy.

Florence County is often regarded as the gateway to the Northwoods, with a vast majority of its land encompassed within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The county is also home to over 200 lakes, numerous rivers, and abundant wildlife, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Fun fact: The iconic Florence County Historical Society Museum, originally built in the 1880s as a saloon, has a unique architectural feature - a two-story outhouse! This amusing bit of history offers a glimpse into the day-to-day life during the early years of the county.
