Fond du Lac County, located in the great state of Wisconsin, has a rich and varied history. The county's name originates from the French term "fond du lac," meaning "bottom of the lake," which references its location at the southern end of Lake Winnebago. The area was originally inhabited by the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) Native American tribe before European settlement took place.

European exploration in the broader region began in the 17th century by French fur trappers and missionaries. The first permanent European settlements were established in the early 19th century in communities like Taycheedah and Fond du Lac. The county was officially established in December 1839, and Fond du Lac became the county seat in 1844.

Fond du Lac County saw significant development during the 19th and 20th centuries, primarily driven by its fertile agricultural land and robust industries including lumber, grain mills, and manufacturing. The construction of the Wisconsin Central Railroad in the 1870s brought additional growth, increasing the movement of goods and people throughout the region.

In the 20th century, the area gradually evolved from its industrial roots to a hub for business, education, and healthcare. The manufacturing industry in Fond du Lac County still thrives today, with companies serving the automotive industry and other sectors.

One fun fact about Fond du Lac County is that it hosts the annual "Walleye Weekend" fishing competition and festival, held in June at Lakeside Park on the shores of Lake Winnebago. This event, which features live music, food, and games for families, draws thousands of participants and visitors each year.
