Iowa County is located in the southwestern part of Wisconsin and is named after the Iowa River that runs through the county. Established in 1829 as a lead-mining district, it was attached to several other counties before becoming its established jurisdiction on February 21, 1847. The county boasts a rich history in lead and zinc mining, which attracted settlers from different parts of the world, especially during the 19th century.

One of the county's most famous attractions is the House on the Rock, which lies in the northern part of Iowa County, near Spring Green. The House on the Rock was designed by Alex Jordan Jr. and opened to the public in 1960. The unique, sprawling construction is set atop a 60-foot chimney-like rock, enhancing its whimsical, enchanting architectural design. Today, it remains a popular tourist destination in the region, attracting visitors who marvel at its eccentric collections and stunning views.

Fun fact: Iowa County is home to the Mustard Museum, originally established in Mount Horeb in 1992 but then relocated to Middleton.
