Lafayette County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Wisconsin. The county, named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French general who played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War, was initially formed in 1846 from a part of Iowa County.

The first European settlers arrived in this area during the early 19th century, with lead mining being a significant impetus for their arrival. Mineral Point in the neighboring Iowa County became the hub of the region's mining operations. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the economy of Lafayette County revolved around mining, agriculture, and dairy farming.

The county seat of Darlington was initially settled in 1835 and then laid out in 1847 by William and James Wood, who were early fur traders in the area. The city of Shullsburg is another significant settlement in the county, with its historical roots in lead mining dating back to the 1820s. Both these communities offer visitors a glimpse into the region's rich cultural history, through well-preserved structures and historical sites.
