Marquette County is a rural area located in the central region of the great state of Wisconsin. It was created in 1836 as a territorial county and was named after Father Jacques Marquette, a 17th-century French Jesuit priest, and explorer who played a significant role in the early exploration of the Midwest, especially in the Great Lakes region.

The county was formally established on Feb 27, 1848, after Wisconsin achieved statehood. The initial formation of the county and its governmental structure can be traced back to the time of Native American settlements in the area, followed by European-American settlers in the early 19th century. The early economy of Marquette County was mainly agricultural, with a strong emphasis on dairy farming, wheat production, and lumber.

Since its establishment, Marquette County has experienced growth and development, with the construction of roads, infrastructure, and businesses through the years. The county seat, Montello, was established in 1849 and it provided a center for trade, government, and transportation.

Encompassing 464 square miles, Marquette County is characterized by a mix of scenic landscapes, including prairielands, forests, rivers, and lakes. One notable fun fact about Marquette County is that it is home to the John Muir County Park, which memorializes the childhood home of the famous naturalist and environmental advocate John Muir. He spent part of his younger years in this region before attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and would later go on to play a significant role in the establishment of the national park system in the United States.
