Monroe County, located in the great state of Wisconsin, was established on June 29, 1854, and named in honor of the fifth U.S. President, James Monroe. The county is situated in the Driftless Area, a region characterized by picturesque hills, valleys, and unique geological features, as it was largely untouched by glaciers during the last Ice Age. The county seat, Sparta, was chosen in 1859. The region encompasses a total area of 908 square miles, with a population of around 46,000 residents.

Rich in history, Monroe County's economy was primarily driven by agriculture and lumbering in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Over time, the county diversified its economy by embracing tourism, manufacturing, and other industries. To strengthen the connection between communities, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad was developed, which significantly aided Monroe County's growth.

A fun fact about Monroe County is that it is home to the Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bicycle Museum in Sparta. This unique museum combines the fascinating history of bicycles and space exploration, as Sparta was known as the "Bicycling Capital of America" and is also the hometown of astronaut Donald "Deke" Slayton, one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts. The museum showcases not only the history of bicycles and space travel but also honors the local hero, Deke Slayton.
