Oconto County is located in northeastern Wisconsin, in the great state of the United States of America. The county, covering an area of about 1,149 square miles, was officially established in 1851 following a partition from Menominee County. Its name, "Oconto," is derived from an Anishnaabe word that is thought to mean "place of the pickerel" or "pickerel fishery," alluding to the county's ample rivers and lakes.

Historically, Oconto County was home to various Native American tribes, including the Menominee, Potawatomi, and Ojibwa. The county has numerous archaeological sites featuring ancient burial mounds, village sites, and artifacts, some of which date back to around 10,000 years ago. One of the earliest European settlers in the region was a French-Canadian explorer named Charles de Langlade, who established fur trading routes in the mid-1700s.

During the early 19th century, the lumber industry played a significant role in the growth and development of the county. Many sawmills and logging camps were established throughout the region near the Oconto River, attracting immigrants from countries such as Germany, Ireland, and Canada. The population of Oconto County grew with the expansion of the Chicago & North Western Railway, which connected the county to other major cities and made it easier for people to access goods, services, and markets.

One fun fact about Oconto County is the famous Oconto archaeological site, also known as Copper Culture State Park. The site, located in the city of Oconto, is home to the country's oldest copper-smelting works, which date back to around 5,000 to 6,000 years ago. Additionally, it's considered one of the oldest, continuously occupied sites in North America. The park includes a museum that features a variety of artifacts and historical displays, showcasing the rich past of Oconto County and its people.
