Richland County, located in the southwestern region of the great state of Wisconsin, was established on February 18, 1842. It was created from the territorial St. Croix County and named after a local landmark, Richland Center, which was named such because of the rich soil found in that area.

The area was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago), Kickapoo, and Sac (Sauk) tribes. European settlement in Richland County began after the Black Hawk War in 1832, which ended with a treaty allowing white settlers to move into the area.

The county seat, Richland Center, was founded in 1851 by Ira Haseltine. It was chosen for its central location in the county, making it easily accessible for residents. Richland Center was officially incorporated in 1882 and has grown into the largest city within the county.

Agriculture played a significant role in the development of Richland County, with settlers establishing farms that benefited from the rich soil. Dairy farming became particularly important, and the region became known for producing quality cheeses. Logging, manufacturing, and tourism have also contributed to the county's economy over the years.

One fun fact about Richland County is that it's home to the 'Little Red Schoolhouse,' a one-room schoolhouse constructed in 1884, which has been preserved as a historic site. The schoolhouse, located in Rockbridge, gives visitors a glimpse into the rural education of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
