Shawano County, located in the great state of Wisconsin, was established on February 16, 1853. The name "Shawano" is derived from the Native American Chippewa (Ojibwe) term "Sha-wa-Nah-Pay," meaning "southern," which refers to its position in relation to Ojibwe territories in the area. The county is situated in the northeastern part of Wisconsin, occupying an area of approximately 909 square miles, with Shawano serving as its county seat.

The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Menominee, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Stockbridge-Munsee. European settlement began in the early-to-mid 1800s, with immigrants primarily from Germany, Ireland, and Poland contributing to the growth of local communities.

Throughout its history, Shawano County has primarily been an agriculturally driven area, with dairy farming and crop cultivation playing significant roles in the local economy. Additionally, the county was home to several sawmills in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, utilizing the extensive lumber resources available in the region.

A fun fact about Shawano County is that it has a unique population of albino white-tailed deer. These rare animals can be found within the county's borders, and their all-white coats make them an intriguing sight for nature enthusiasts in the area.
