Washburn County is located in the northwest region of the great state of Wisconsin. Established on March 3, 1883, it was named in honor of Cadwallader C. Washburn, a prominent figure in regional politics and industry. He served as the 11th governor of Wisconsin, a U.S. Congressman, and was the founder of the Washburn-Crosby Company, which later became General Mills.

The county has a rich history in logging and agriculture, which were both key economic activities during the 19th and early 20th centuries. As the logging industry boomed, several communities within the county were established, including the cities of Spooner, Shell Lake, and Birchwood. The county's natural resources attracted settlers to the area, and by the early 20th century, it had become a hub of dairy farming, which further contributed to the growth of small communities throughout the region.

Over time, Washburn County evolved into a popular destination for tourists seeking outdoor recreational activities. The county offers numerous lakes, rivers, and forests, making it an ideal spot for fishing, hunting, and other outdoor pursuits. The tourism industry continues to play a significant role in the local economy.

A fun fact about Washburn County is that it is home to the world's largest ball of twine created by a single person. This impressive feat was accomplished by James Frank Kotera, known as "JFK," in 1979. The giant ball of twine can be found in the town of Lake Nebagamon and weighs over 23,000 pounds. Tourists and locals alike are drawn to this unique attraction, which continues to grow as JFK adds to it each year.
