Winnebago County, located in the great state of Wisconsin, was established on January 6, 1840. Named after the Winnebago Native American tribe, the county's name means "people of the stinking water," referring to the algae blooms in Lake Winnebago, which gave off a distinct odor. The county's seat is Oshkosh, which was derived from the name of the Menominee Indian Chief Oshkosh, whose name means "claw."

In the early 19th century, Winnebago County attracted settlers primarily due to its rich natural resources, such as abundant fertile land, forests, and waterways. Its strategic location at the southwestern shore of Lake Winnebago provided opportunities for industrial development and trade. The region played a crucial role in Wisconsin's lumber industry, with Oshkosh becoming known as the "Sawdust City" due to the numerous sawmills sprouting up along the Fox River.

The county played a significant role in the transportation history of Wisconsin, as it is home to the first plank road in the state, which stretched from Fond du Lac to Appleton. This plank road spurred the development of the region's infrastructure, paving the way for the introduction of the railroad in 1859.

A fun fact about Winnebago County is that it is home to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the world's largest and most significant annual aviation event. This week-long event takes place each summer and attracts over 500,000 visitors from over 60 countries, featuring airshows, workshops, and numerous exhibits dedicated to aviation history and innovation.
