Fayette County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was officially founded on February 28, 1831. It was named in honor of Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero and key supporter of the American Revolution. The county, which covers approximately 668 square miles, is situated within the Appalachian Mountain range in southern West Virginia.

Fayette County is home to parts of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, which offers residents and visitors access to myriad outdoor recreational activities such as whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and hiking. It is also known for its rich history of coal mining and timbering, which were significant industries in the late 19th and 20th centuries. This history is evident through preserved locations, including the preserved town of Thurmond, which served as an important railway hub during the height of the mining era.

One fun fact about Fayette County is that it is home to the iconic New River Gorge Bridge. Completed in 1977, the bridge stands at 876 feet above the New River, making it the third-highest bridge in the United States. The New River Gorge Bridge is also one of the longest single-span arch bridges in the world, measuring 3,030 feet. It has become a symbolic landmark in West Virginia, and every year in October, the "Bridge Day" event allows visitors to experience BASE jumping, rappelling, and high-lining from the bridge itself.
