Grant County is a picturesque county located in the Potomac Highlands region of the great state of West Virginia. It was founded in 1866 and named in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant, who later became the 18th President of the United States. Grant County was formed from parts of Hardy County and is bordered by Mineral, Tucker, Pendleton, and Hardy Counties.

Petersburg, the county seat, was named after Peter Van Meter, who owned the land on which the town was built. It is a thriving small town that serves as the economic and cultural center of the county.

The rich historical heritage of Grant County is evident through various landmarks, such as the Garrett Van Meter Monument or Fort Mulligan, a Civil War earthworks fortification. The region also features the Seneca Rocks, a prominent rock formation that played a crucial role in World War II as a training ground for the US Army's 10th Mountain Division.

One fun fact about Grant County: The region is well known for its outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking, rock climbing, fishing, and scenic drives. In particular, the county is home to the portion of the Monongahela National Forest and Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area, which attract thousands of tourists each year.
