Hampshire County, located in the eastern panhandle of the great state of West Virginia, boasts a rich history that dates back to the early colonial period. Established in 1754, it holds the distinction of being the oldest county in West Virginia. Created by the Virginia General Assembly, Hampshire County initially included areas that now fall under other West Virginia counties, as well as parts of Maryland and Virginia.

Its early history is deeply intertwined with Native American tribes, primarily the Shawnee and Tuscarora tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the early 1700s, and the region quickly became a hotbed for agriculture and trade. Hampshire County played an essential role during the French and Indian War, with a small fortification constructed in present-day Romney known as Pearsall's Fort.

During the American Revolution, Hampshire County contributed to the cause by supplying resources and troops. The county experienced a significant event during the Civil War when it changed hands several times between Confederate and Union forces. Romney, the county seat, was subject to 56 documented changes in occupancy during the war, giving it the unique distinction of changing hands more times than any other town during the Civil War.

As the county and its surrounding regions developed and grew, so did the importance of transportation. Hampshire County became an essential link in West Virginia's railroad and road networks, promoting further development and economic growth. Agriculture, including livestock and crop farming, remained the primary industry throughout the county's history, along with timber and mining.

A fun fact about Hampshire County is that it is home to the Ice Mountain Preserve, a unique landmark with an elevation of approximately 1,485 feet. The preserve is named after the ice vents located at its base, which release cold air throughout the year, causing ice to form in the winter and remain until late summer.

In summary, Hampshire County in West Virginia has a fascinating history dating back to Native American tribes, early European settlers, and significant engagements during the French and Indian War and Civil War. Today, its rich past, natural beauty, and landmarks like the Ice Mountain Preserve continue to attract visitors and residents alike.
