Hancock County, located in the northern tip of West Virginia, was officially established on January 15, 1848, and named after John Hancock, a prominent figure in the American Revolution known for his large signature on the Declaration of Independence. The county was created from Brooke County - the northernmost part of Virginia at the time - and became part of West Virginia after it became a separate state from Virginia in 1863 during the American Civil War.

The history of the area dates back to the 1700s when the land was inhabited by Native American tribes, predominantly the Mingo and Shawnee. European settlers arrived in the late 18th century, and by the early 19th century, the region became populated by farmers and traders.

The 19th and early 20th centuries saw significant growth in industry in Hancock County, with coal mining and steel manufacturing becoming dominant sources of employment. The town of New Cumberland, the county seat, was incorporated in 1900 and thrived as a center of industry.

As for a fun fact about this region of the USA, Hancock County is known for its historic connection to the pottery industry. Specifically, the city of Chester housed one of the largest pottery manufacturing facilities in the world, the Taylor, Smith & Taylor Pottery Company. The company, in operation from 1899 to 1981, produced a well-known line of dinnerware called "Lu-Ray Pastels," which became highly popular across the United States.
